Configure your router to forward L2TP traffic to your VPN Server

I cannot be much specific here because there are a ton of different routers out there. You definitely need a router that allows you to create a port forwarding or a virtual server forwarding. You will have to forward the following to your VPN server:

  • UDP, port 500
  • UDP, port 4500

For less experts, that have access to their router’s config, please be careful: you will have to forward these ports to the IP address of your VPN server so make sure it’s got a static IP!

Without a Public IP/Port forwarding you won’t be able to reach your VPN server from outside of your LAN. There are a few ISP (Fastweb in Italy for instance) that allow you to have a public IP as an extra service.
